Spoiled Rotten for Lost

by Elizabeth Martin

Note, No Spoilers Ahead.

I am spoiled, spoiled rotten. I am oozing putrid smells from all sorts of sores. If I were you, I wouldn't hang out with me until after November sweeps. Well, that's if you want to stay spoiler-free.

The internet, it is joyous and bountiful. Like a sick friend, I visit it every day until it infects me with its pretty colors and secret information. There are videos and screen caps and theory boards to wet my appetite. I'm a kid in a candy store with unlimited access. It's fantastic.

My new obsession? Lost. Oh Lost, why do you torture me like so? After a crazy first season filled with Rambo philosophers, numbers on soccer girls, 40s bomb shelters, and crazy French women I had no choice but to turn to the internet. I was scared, deep, and only the power of posting could heal my wounds.

The summer was long. I was weak. I did the unthinkable. I spoiled myself rotten.

Like most addictions, I was introduced to my first fix through a friend. A co-worker to be exact. Michelle has the cubicle next to me and also shares my love of Lost. She sent me an link to www.oceanic-air.com, a Disney created website of the doomed airline Oceanic Flight 815 that crashed on the creepy crackpot island that is Lost. This site contained a seating chart, a seating chart filled with secrets! Maps, photos, secret scenes, a Russian vodka bottle, it was glorious. Michelle and I were giddy, shouting to each other, smiling from ear to ear. Nothing could compare to that magical day. Sigh. I've been chasing that same high ever since.

One site came close, www.channel4.com, a site created by our much cooler compatriots: the British. In England, they haven't finished the first season, so most of the imagery is based on the first couple of episodes. But the site is really pretty, and creepy. Beware the crazy music. I suggest listening to it with headphones. It will creep you out yo!

On the first page click on Jack's highlighted name on the manifest. Hidden in the puzzle is Jack's email address! If you want to have a fantasy friendship with Jack, email him. He will respond. You guys can email like old pals back and forth, laughing the day away. Not that I have tried it.

Yeah, well, after that it just got nasty.

While that's all fun and good, the site itself is a bit lacking. Channel 4, like most affiliate websites, leave very few real clues. People who profit from me actually watching the show are not going to tell me what is down the Hatch (the big cliffhanger at the end of Season 1) or what all the numbers really mean. I want to know what is going to happen to cute broody Sawyer and scrappy Kate. How can I live without knowing if they ever make out?

It was then that I crossed over. It was the site Lost-Media.com. Someone posted the casting news for Lost Season 2. Something about tailaways. I clicked. I read. I gasped. And that was it. It was all over. No more virgin television watching. It went so fast.

With my spoiled mind I awaited the return of Lost with great anticipation. Did you have September 23 circled? Mine had hearts all around it. Somehow I gathered enough strength to avoid knowing what was in the hatch, but I knew Jack was going to have flashbacks, Knew Shannon would see Walt, I even knew who would survive the raft! Did it hurt my experience? Ready for the shocker?

No.

Spoilers are games. They're only pieces of information, gathered from scripts, leaks, casting, random people happening upon a film set. Nothing is ever conclusive, nor is it ever complete. I may have known that Shannon saw Walt but I had no idea he was going to talk like a Swedish person underwater. By the way, that was freakin' cool.

Funny thing, lots of people think like me. Many personal fan sites for Lost have turned into high traffic areas. I've seen a few, like www.lostlinks2.net shut down in lack of a sufficient servers. There are unconfirmed rumors that the Lost creators themselves have hired entertainment companies to create websites in order to create a myth-like culture around Lost. Web sites pop up now and then, some with the Disney logo, some without. Each add, or create to the Island mysteries. Just today, a new website, www.megalottojackpot.com, found its way around focusing on Hurley's winning ticket.

So, like the good little bee that I am, even though the summer is over and season two has started, I still search for hours online for Lost secrets. I mean, the week between new episodes is huge. My favorite site right now is Television Without Pity. It's a mecca of information and pithy sayings. In my grand laziness I rather like having everything put together. Plus, they talk about Gilmore Girls, and anything to do with Gilmore Girls is awesome. But, if you want someplace to start your spoiler edge, this is the place to do it.

Be careful, I once spent six straight hours reading forum posts on the number theories, which caused lack of appetite and blurriness.
If you would like to follow in my footsteps here is a listing of all the Lost sites that I find interesting. Be careful, I once spent six straight hours reading forum posts on the number theories, which caused lack of appetite and blurriness.

More Lost Sites
www.oceanicflight815.com
While nowhere on the site does it have Disney paw prints, the original Disney Oceanic Air website links directly to it, so include any knowledge from here as canon. For some reason they have a lot of scenes of the crazy French lady. I guess they crush on her or something.

http://lost-forum.com
It's a forum, organized pretty well. Usually the spoiler information is a little slow, but it's pretty good for general theory discussion.

www.thehansofoundation.org
Disney created this website after the third episode of season 2. It gives a description of all the different stations created by the Hanso Foundation. The Nazi theory stemmed from this website. Read through it and decide for yourself.

www.thefuselage.com
The best forum out there for pure spoiler information. Also Jorge Garcia posts on here, you know, the guy who plays Hurley. His answers are short and sweet, but it's still a real shout out to the fans.

TV Guide
Neat little map and puzzle. Not much else. What do you expect from T.V. Guide?

www.bigspaceship1.com
This website has drummed up a lot of controversy. Is it real? Is it not? On a weekly basis the subject matter changes, but all seem to be clues to the Lost mystery. Right now, there are dancing almonds. Anyone have any ideas?

www.mrclucks.com
If Hurley's episode didn't give you enough Mr. Clucks, here is your answer. I wonder if Pam Anderson is boycotting them too.

http://flight815.blogspot.com
This is a pure fan site. You can see from the "blogspot". The only reason I list this site is because with each post comes a strange picture. Check it out, but only if you are into random things.

www.i-am-Lost.com
This is the ABC Lost website. It's boring. The forum is filled with teenagers cursing. There is a weird map mystery that I can never figure out, and it drives me nuts. I only put it up here as a warning. Anything you read on this forum is most likely a lie. A LIE!

www.thefrenchlady.com
This is my favorite random site. It's just the French lady posting poetry. Man, everyone has a crush on the French Lady. Maybe I should reconsider the whole straight thing.

Well, that should keep you entertained for hours. Remember, please act responsibly with Spoiler Information. Only you can stop ruining stuff for other people.

P.S. I know who gets axed next!
